Perry is the daughter of actors Laurie Metcalf, and Jeff Perry. On her role on the ABC sitcom Roseanne (in flashback) her mother starred as Jackie Harris in two of Perry's initial TV roles. The parents of her were not keen to let her play an acting career until she was an adult, fearing the effects of stress. Perry said that she felt shy to do any acting when she was in high school. However, she started playing in the theater at Northwestern University as a way to meet new people after she transferred from Boston University. Perry following her graduation from Boston University, moved in New York in search of the role on TV. Perry was able to land small roles on shows such as Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But, her home-sickness caused her to move to California to pursue theater opportunities. She and her mother starred on Broadway together for the play The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she performed with her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winning drama Anna Christie in the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry was in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in the ABC political drama Scandal which starred her father. That same year she portrayed a child version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory) as her mother as a young version. She was able to be cast in the character despite her connections to the character's family.
